To be 6/8 units from 1/8, you need to either add or subtract 6/8 from 1/8.

1/8-6/8 = -5/8

1+8+6+8 = 7/8

On the number line, just count 6 markers to the left or right from 1/8, since each marker is 1/8 of a unit.
