The gzip (gnu ZIP) utility is a compression utility designed to be a replacement for compress. The utility was written by Jean-loup Gailly for the GNU (uncompress files) project. To uncompress a file compressed with the gzip utility, you use the gunzip command.
gzip produces files with a .gz extension.
