This is because you can add 14 to the sum of their ages 7yrs ago to find out the sum of their ages now. This is 27.
18 + 9 = 27 (9 x 2 = 18) (this is now)
And to double check : (7yrs ago)
18 - 7 = 11 9 - 7 = 2
11 + 2 = 13
