The transatlantic trade expanded as the British colonies advanced due to presence of a market for various commodities. The British merchants were able to barter trade goods for people on the African coast, then sail to the West Indies or North America to sell the enslaved Africans. From North America, they took cargoes of plantation produce back to England.
