Slaves on plantations were considered to be chattel property.

Chattel is defined personal possessions, rather than land property. Both cattle and slaves were called chattel. A chattel slave is a person who was enslaved and whose descendants would also automatically be enslaved. They were treated just like any type of property and could be bought and sold.
