A pregnancy substitute is a set of injections and pills that women are given to stimulate the effects of being pregnant. That is, the injections  stimulate the hormonal effects of pregnancy. The injections are normally intravenous and are meant to trick the body into thinking it is pregnant and that balances the hormones.
