The main way in which the Canadian Pacific Railway contributed to the settlement and expansion of the West in the United States was that it provided an "over" passage above the United States (in Canada) that led to the western states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana. This allowed for people to travel quickly and efficiently from states in the midwest and east such as Illinois and Ohio.
