George Kennan wanted to contain communism within its boundaries in the Soviet Union and wanted to prevent it from spreading across the war torn Europe. The marshall plan was good for this because it focused on funding western and central European countries to rebuild and join the United States as an ally instead of joining the Soviet Union.
