The gastric juice contain harsh chemicals which includes pepsin, hydrochloric acid to break down food. Gastric juice contain mucus to neutralize its acidity that can be damaging to the stomach, especially the duodenal wall. Excessive secretion of gastric juice and failure to neutralize it completely can result to ulcers in the duodenal wall.
