What is the connection between jewish beliefs about individual worth and the modern idea of equality before law?

The Jewish believed that every individual was born equal and was worth same that everyone else was worth. This is essentially the same thing as our modern idea of equality. Since everyone is worth the same, everyone should get the same chance to defend themselves when accused of committing a crime.
