How did changing ideas on the role of the individual affect the way scientists began to understand the physical world?

Physicists eventually started to discover the physical world around them with the scientific method. Before this was actually achieved, people had to understand that they themselves are only part of nature and that there was no immaterial soul nor holy spirit that could explain them their relation to different aspects of the physical world.
