I don't know if this right but here's what I did and I hope this helps:
step 1: since 1/5 and 2/5 have the same denominator just subtract straight across and keep that denominator: 1-2 = -1/5
step 2: subtract just the 8 and 4 and get= +4 (positive 4)
step 3: combine step 1's answer with step 2's answer to get final answer: 4 -1/5
