One difficulty that Farquhar overcomes when he is in the stream is first untying his wrists so that they are free. Second, he is able to get the rope around his neck away from his neck and swim to the surface of the water so that he can breathe. Last, an example is that he has to avoid the gunshots by diving deep down into the stream.
