Jefferson believed land was essential for his vision of the republic for several reasons. One, landless people would have to become wager laborers. Two, land ownership allowed every (white, male) American to become a farmer and take care of his own family. Three, without new land, the country would quickly become overpopulated. Four, expanding west and elsewhere would push the Spanish and French out of the Americas.
