Columbus exaggerated about the Caribbean Islands possession of gold, cotton, and spices in the sense that he lied about quantities. In reality, the Caribbean Islands had far less than he stated in his first letter; he may have been lying about the wealth of the islands to detract from other issues, notably the loss of his flagship during the journey to the islands.
