In the novel the character is consumed with achieving the goals that he has set out for himself. Therefore the novels theme (reason why written) was to inform the reader to not be consumed by all these goals in life and take it one day at a time. He viewed the goals and the road as "the road to success". thats why he traveled to show that take it day by day to get where you want in life.
