China had a one-child-per-family policy that was announced in 1979 that lasted until 2015.

China had a one-child-per-family policy in the 1970s. 

The policy was initiated by the central government of China to limit family sizes and possibly slow down the huge growth population in China that was leading to overpopulation which resulted in limited resources including space, food, etc.
