If you read about the men in the renaissance (e.g. Leonardo Di Vinci) you'll see that he was an artist, sculptor, scientist, scholar, reader, writer, biologist, aviator, ect. So this expression means that you pretty much do everything for a living. Kind of like the saying "A jack of all trades, but a master of none".
