When Spain conquered Mexico, they created the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Mexico remained a Spanish colony from 1535 until 1821. A lot of the Spanish customs and language remain…ed and were adopted by Mexicans. Most of the southwest continued to be part of Mexico until the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) when Mexico lost California, Nevada, Utah, Texas and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming to the United States.
