I'll first convert to improper fractions...rule a b/c=(ac+b)/c

31/6-8/3

adding/subtracting fractions requires a common denominator...

31/6-(8/3)(2/2)

31/6-16/6

(31-16)/6

15/6  now convert back to mixed number....

(12+3)/6

2 3/6  and simplify fractional part...

2 1/2
