Murray Cox and colleagues analysed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 266 Malagasy and 2745 Indonesians. This DNA is inherited from the mother. Their findings indicated that Madagascar's initial population of women contained genes which has 93% ties to Indonesia.
