It was founded by anti-slavery activists, modernists, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers in 1854. The North dominated from 1860-1932. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican during the 1800's. They were conservatives. Their slogan was "free labor, free land, free men."
