The word protagonist is made up of two Greek words-

“proto” usually meaning “first”.
“agonistes” usually meaning “actor”.

The prefix “pro” has no exact meaning to my knowledge, but based on the previous meaning of ‘proto’ we can assume it relates in the same context.
