Why did Macbeth kill Duncan’s guards after killing Duncan?

When the lords go to arrest Duncan's guards, they find that Macbeth has murdered them. He claims it's because he was furious at them for murdering Duncan, but it appears highly suspicious. Duncan's sons flee, fearful that they will be next on the hit list.
