In literature, a motif is an image, sound, object, idea, action or any other figure that ha a symbolic significance. Therefore, a motif is similar to a symbol. However, a symbol usually appears only a few times in a work, while a motif is a recurring idea. Moreover, the motif contributes to the development of a theme.
