2x^2-4x-6=0
2(x^2-2x-3)=0
2(x-3)(x+1)=0
2=0 x-3=0 x+1=0
2 does not = 0 so this is extraneous
x=3
x=-1

(2x2-4)-6=0
2x2-4x-6=2*(x2-2x-3)
x2-3x+1x-3
1*(x-3)
(x+1) * (x+3).
