                                                             1/2(x-4) = 4

Multiply each side of the equation by  2 :  (x- 4) =  8

Add  4  to each side of the equation:          x      = 12

1/2(x-4)=4 
1/2x-2=4 (expand the brackets)
1/2x=6 (added 2 to both sides)
x= 6/(1/2)
x= 6*2
x=12
