Total width = 24 inches
Wanted width = 2 1/2 inches = 2.5 inches
Now,

To find how many stripes of wood with this width can be made, we need to divide the total width by the wanted width.

So,
24/2.5 = 9.6

So,
Since, .6 is not a full stripe of wood, we only loook at the whole number.

So,
9 stripes of wood can be cut with that width.
