I would say no because to say yes would mean that African Americans were not truly considered to be American. Really, only white men were granted complete freedom, but that takes out a whole chunk of the American population that was not considered free. So yes, some individuals experienced freedom in America’s past, but since not ALL Americans were able to experience that freedom due to slavery, true American freedom did not exist.
