These types of problems are unfortunately only done through trial and error. There may be clever ways to tackle some problems, but this one I'm blanking on any other method.

The portion 4^2+2 simplifies to 16+2 = 18. Then note how 18*3 = 54. We do the 4^2+2 first because its in parenthesis. Refer to PEMDAS.
