There were 20 gallons of gasoline in your car's gas tank. you used 4 gallons and 1 quart. how much gasoline remains in the tank?

For this problem, we just have to subtract the initial volume with the volume being used up. But before doing this, it is important that all values have the same units. We calculate as follows:

20 gallons - (4 gallons + 1 quart ( 1 gallon / 4 quarts)) = 15.75 gallons of gasoline in the gas tank
