The Northbridge chipset allows the fastest components such as the RAM and the video card to interface with the CPU at the front side bus speed. All other components such as the BIOS, hard drive and the expansion slots communicate with the CPU via the Southbridge chipset. Southbridge , in most cases, allows the CPU to communicate with the hard drives, sound card, USB ports, and other I/O ports.
