william clark and meriwether lewis (lewis and clark) conducted a exploration westward from 1804-06. with the growing belief of manifest destiny the move west was a national obsession. their expedition established that the continent could be traversed ( meaning that the discovery motivated others to explore unknown territories, between the mississippi river and pacific ocean.
