Why are the police sometimes involved in protests or rallies?

Answer: The police try to calm things down, even at peaceful protests they feel they're needed, when 95% of the time they're really not. They get involved because they feel it's their job or business. I disagree with their involvement when it comes to simple peaceful protests, because in reality no ones getting hurt they are just stating their feelings and opinions.
