Answer: Helps keep the species alive

Explanation:

When the eggs are externally fertilized, there is a greater chance for multiple  different males to fertilize the eggs. This gives Gene diversity, and helps keep the species alive. It may also help keep the eggs in good condition. For example, when fish lay eggs, the water helps keep the eggs moisturized.
