Southerners got what they wanted: Not a lot of tax and representation.

Explanation:

The 3/5 compromise gave southerners representation (more people=more representation) and the south had a large population of slaves. With more people the south had to pay more tax. They where willing to compromise because not every slave would be counted for tax, but there was enough slaves for a higher representation in congress.
