There were several reasons.
1. If the Europeans brought them to America, they would be familiar with the land, so they would be less likely to escape.
2. The Europeans believe that they were resistant to certain diseases (they weren't)
3. The Europeans know that they couldn't speak English, so they wouldn't be able to communicate
