Why did the author use the word nymph instead of larva when describing the cicada’s life cycle?

Because a Larva changes form drastically and a Nyphm doesn’t change very much from birth just like cicadas

Definition of Nyphm: an immature form of an insect that does not change greatly as it grows, e.g. a dragonfly, mayfly, or locust.
