When UV lights from the sun hit a CFC molecule, the carbon-chlorine bond breaks, allowing a now free chlorine atom to come in contact with an ozone molecule, which “destroys” it, because the chlorine takes one oxygen atom (chlorine monoxide) and leaves the other two alone (oxygen).
