Thomas Paine's essay "Common Sense" was significant to American Independence because his essay outlined the reasons why revolution was necessary in plain language for the average American to get behind. The mass publication and distribution of Common Sense led to increased support for revolution and separation from Great Britain. The essay used common language, religious imagery, and strong moral arguments to appeal to the average colonist to gain support for the movement.
