The Allies invaded the Mediterranean to remove Italy from the Axis powers, which would also stop the Axis influence in the Mediterranean, opening it up to Allied traffic. Also, opening up a second front would lessen the force on the eastern front.

Southern Europe was not as strongly defended as the coast of France.
