Before he became a professional writer, he pursued a medical degree and worked as a surgeon in a ship sailing for the Arctic Circle while in third year college. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Medicine in 1881 and hired as a medical officer of steamship Mayumba routing from Liverpool to Africa.
