What does constant mean in science

Constants are things in a science experiment that stay the same for everything in the experiment. For example, let's say that you were doing a science experiment and you want to see what plant grew faster under different types of light. You wouldn't want to test 3 different types of plants or put them in different types of soil because your data would be off. Constants are very important to science experiments.
