Mohandas Gandhi wrote these words in the decade following World War I. After helping Great Britain come out on the winning side in the Great War, India remained a colony. Gandhi employed the strategy of Satyagraha, or non-violent resistance, to wear down British resolve to keep India as a colonial possession. By 1947, Satyagraha had proven successful.
