Funding Columbus' expedition was most certainly beneficial to Spain, as they became the verey first european country to set foot in the "new world" and take advantage of all the unexploited riches. Further expeditions granted Spain with an immesurable influx of wealth that was absolutely crucial in cementing them as one of the most powerful european forces for centuries to come.
