the nebular hypothesis is the most commonly accepted theory as to the formation of the solar system. it states that our solar system formed from the gravitational collapse of a huge molecular cloud, likely one that was light years across. the majority of the mass from this collapse gathered in the middle to form our sun, while the rest began orbiting around the sun, eventually forming the planets we know today.
