Leonidas, born in 530 B.C., was leader of the Spartans from 490 B.C. to his untimely death in 480 B.C. He was recognised as a hero because, after realizing that he was outmanouvred by the Persians at Thermopylae, saved the bulk of his army and held off the Persians.
