An event that initializes the formation of a zygote is fertilization.
Fertilization is a process of fusion between two gametes, male and female (sperm and egg cell). As a result, the formed zygote's genome is a combination of the DNA in each gamete. The zygote is the earliest developmental stage, but it contains all of the genetic information necessary to form an adult organism.
