Why is population such a grave problem for sociologists and economists

Population effects everything in the world we live in. As human civilizations, we have to create and produce for the masses. Food, clothing, materials, are all things we consume as humans. The population relates to economics gravely. If a majority of the populous didn't work it would create major problems in the world.
