Hermia's father Egeus wanted Hermia to marry Demetrius but Hermia refused because she was in love with Lysander. Egeus asked Theseus, the Duke of Athens for the right to kill Hermia for her refusal to obey him. Theseus ordered Hermia to marry Demetrius or live her life as a nun.
